Quotes

In my English 106 class we have been reading Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. In addition to reading the novel we have been annotating it in preparation for and argument paper we must write with support from the novel in the form of quotes. We have to read for class and discuss some important parts. There were a few quotes i thought to be most important to my view on who the bad guy is.
The first quote I came across that i thought showed Frankenstein’s obsession was after he met professor M. Waldman and attended one of his lectures. Frankenstein took every word from the lecture to heart and it was a real inspiration to him. After hearing the lecture Frankenstein said,”Such were the professor’s words-rather let me say such the words of fate- enounced to destroy me”(49). He is basically saying that this lecture from M.Waldman was the trigger of his madness. He already knew that his ambitions were different from most others, but meeting Professor M.Waldon gave him the approval to go where no other scientist has gone.
Frankenstein then says, “So much has been done, exclaimed the soul of Frankenstein—more, far more, will I achieve; treading in the steps already marked, I will pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers, and unfold to the world the deepest mysteries of creation”(49). He becomes obsessed with being one of those great scientists that professor M.Waldman had spoken so fondly about. He wants to pioneer a new way and explore the mysteries of creation. How does life begin? Why does life end? He is curious about how to extend life.
This shows his obsession and could excuse his terror when he actually creates life and realizes what he has done. He was so obsessed with how to create life and when he finally does it he says, “… but now that I had finished, the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart”(58). Frankenstein was not a horrible person who created something and abandoned it. He was a man that wanted nothing to do with life, but death was his life. How do you stop death; was the only question in his mind. Once he had to take of a living person instead of a dead one he was lost. He was also obsessed with the outer layer of a person and the monster was not up to his standards, He didn’t know what to do.
Those were some quotes that I thought to be important to describe the thoughts behind Frankenstein’s actions.

I recently read an article called “The Cemetery Skeleton”for my English 106 class. We read this article a a follow up to watching the 1931 Frankenstein. “The Cemetery Skeleton”, describes the importance of the skeleton in the first scene of Frankenstein and how it sets the mood for the rest of the film. According to “The Cemetery Skeleton”, “The skeleton is an ancient and enduring symbol of death.”
The first scene of Frankenstien takes place at a funeral in a cemetery, with Dr. Frankenstein and his assistant Fritz hiding during the funeral. The audience not quite knowing what’s going to happen next. Although the skeleton sets a mood of darkness, the funeral also fills you in on the dark mood trying to be patrayed by James Whale. The hooded skeleton stays in the audiences’ view throughout the scene and gives an eery feeling.
When the funeral ends Dr. Frankenstein and his assistant Fritz sit and watch the grave being filled with dirt. Even though they have the intention to dig it back up they had enough repect for the living man to let him do his job before they dig up the grave. I beleive that Dr. Frankenstien does not repect the dead, but does respect live. I believe that is why he desecrates the dead to create a new living being.
James Whale kept the skeleton in the camera frame as Dr. Frankenstein and his assistant Fritz dug up the dead mans grave. “The Cemetery Skeleton” states, “The cemetery skeleton is the first hint of frights to come, yet it is more than just a lugubrious prop. The grim sentinel stands prominently screen right, a witness to desecration, through the entire sequence where Frankenstein and Fritz dig up and raise the coffin.” It makes me think back to the scene and I now realize that I didn’t pay it that much attention at the time. Reading this article I realize that paying attention to the small things can help you understand some things better.

I recently watched I the 1931 Frankenstein in my English 106 class and then read a summary on Classic-Horror.com about it. I was caught by surprise when I actually enjoyed the 1931 Frankenstein. After all the remakes of the idea of Frankenstein that I’ve seen over the years, it was refreshing to see the very first movie. The movie has got me more than ready to read the book. I can honestly say I might be a little excited about it. After reading the summary on Classic-Horror.com there were a lot of things they said that I agree with. They mentioned that the character of Frankenstein obtained his face from this movie. Mary Shelley’s novel never had a description of the Monster so the director made the monster how he thought he should be made. I have never read the book, but in my class they talk about the fact that the monster talked frequently and was actually smart in the novel. In the movie you had more room to formed your own opinion of how the monster felt. Throughout the movie there were signs of him being a child like giant how wanted to be with his creator. He could tell when he had done wrong, but didn’t know how to handle the situation once he did. T he way the movie starts you can tell what its going to be about. It starts at a funeral, showing that the movie would ride the fine line between life and death. Also showing all of what the mad scientist would go through to create his monster. I think the scientist was selfish and didn’t think of the consequences. All he was worried about was proving other people wrong. Without thinking the scientist gave his creation too much power and not enough guidance. Overall I did like the movie and I can’t wait to read the book.
Everything is A Remix

I am a big music lover so I come across remixes everyday. Sometimes artists add a verse to the original and sometimes they use the same instrumental and make an entirely new song. Both ways, in my opinion, are a good thing. It is a way to kleep original ideas alive. Some of my favorite songs have samples from a early 90′s RnB song. It helps the younger generation understand the one before them. Gives the younger generation a chance to hear what their parents heard and hear different types of music. In my opinion older songs are much better than the songs now.But me, I dont know much about book and movies and things like that. I dont really read much and I dont have enough patience to sit down and watch movies. The video we watched in class had some of my favorite movies in it though. My uncle and I are the biggest Star Wars fans you’ll ever meet, but I had no idea of the origins of the story behind it. It was fascinating to see the certain scenes of the various movies side by side with Star Wars and see the similarities. I think it is amazing that modern day directors can incorporate older versions of theirs ideas to inspire the people of the world. Star Wars to me was a movie of heroism vs. cowards aka good vs. evil. I was inspired by the movie to follow my dreams. My other favorite movie ever, Kill Bill, was also mentioned in the movie. I love Kill Bil because of the action and the fact that the director was Quentin Tarantino. I did a paper on him in Graphic Design and his work is amazing. If I was more creative I would be a director. Overall I love most remixes they send the message that everything can be made better. Since my dream is to become an engineering its only right that I love innovation.
Who Am I?

My name is Shonda Lockhart and I’m an 18 year old Purdue University Freshman. I have been told that I am funny so I guess you can call that one of my traits. I am a music fanatic. I absolutely love music, but i can’t stand dancing. I, unfortunately, was born without enough rythm to bust a move on the dance floor. Even without the dancing , I’m really into the whole rap culture and the true meaning behind the songs. Most people think that rap is stupid because the dont understand that most things they say have a deeper meaning. You can really have a big interest in something you understand and are passionate about. Another thing I like to do is play Video games. Being at Purdue going to class and work makes it hard to do though. I mostly play shooters like Call of Duty. Another big thing about me is that I am on the Rugby team and I love it more than anything. Its a big stress reliever. You can walk up and knock someone down and its not against the rules. Its also a good way too stay in shape, not to mention I love my teammates. They are like a family away from my own. I can honestly say that they helped me get into the Purdue University groove. I have to thank them for my awsome GPA last semester. I have a lot of hobbies, but who am i? Its hard for any person to answer that question with 100% certainty. I’ve been a lot of different things, but I love who I am right now. I’m a hard working Purdue student with great grades. I have and excellent creative streak and a deeper understanding of some situations that other people dont understand. I have been through a lot in my lofe, but I wouldnt be here if I didnt have those experiences.
